In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Josh Payne, the Founder of Freedom Physical Therapy Concierge practice and the Founder of Concierge PT Business Coaching.

We dive into Josh's story of being burned out as an outpatient ortho PT early in his career, which lead to him turning to home health for more independence and income. Josh explains how working in home health opened his eyes to working with people at their homes.

Josh went on to open his own Concierge PT practice which he built to 6-figures within 24 months. Since then he's gone on to start Concierge PT Business Coaching where he helps other PTs start their concierge practices.

In this episode, we sit down with John Davie, the Founder of Physio Business Growth: The Science of Physiotherapy Business. 

John shares his experience running a private practice in New Zealand for a decade, which turned into the biggest practice in both New Zealand and Australia. He dives into the methodologies behind his business growth including developing leadership skills and creating a winning culture.

Being a professional water polo player early on in his career allowed John to travel all over the world. During his travels he set aside time to study some of the best physiotherapy clinics and used the lessons he learned from those clinics to grow his own practice and later, other physiotherapy clinics.

He now runs Physio Growth Business where he dedicates his time to helping other physiotherapy private practice owners grow their practices.

In this episode of The Knowbodies Podcast, Will interviews Physical Therapist and Home Health Contracting business coach, Bert De Vera, PT.

Bert shares his story of moving from the Philippines after passing his Board Exam and starting life in America as PT. After working for someone else for 6 years, he hit a wall and started to wonder if the American dream he came for meant working endless hours for someone else and not having time to spend with his family.

That wondering led him to researching different ways to leverage his knowledge and increase his financial stability. He learned about Home Heath Contracting (the details of which he explains in this episode), started his own business, and has since been able to significantly increase his income and help other rehab professionals do the same, providing them with more time with their families and improving their financial lives.

This episode is a real treat to release as our great colleague, Morgan Denny, PT joins us for an in depth discussion on all the aspects of her passion filled career. Her influence as a teacher, a clinician, a leader, and as a friend has been consistently positive, and its no wonder we feel like we always learn something from her when she shares stories like the ones on this episode.

Morgan Denny received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Montana in 2006. She has focused her work in outpatient orthopedic settings, addressing conditions and people of all sorts, both in the United States and around the globe. Morgan believes that it is hard to be happy without first being healthy, and holds a strong belief that all people should have access to the resources they need to lead able-bodied and fulfilling lives. With this in mind, she began traveling to Haiti to provide rehabilitative therapy in 2013, and found passion in addressing the need in this country.

While Morgan’s professional life has focused on physical therapy, she is also a strong advocate for implementing sustainable living practices. She spent two years creating a non-profit project called EcoJaunt, whose mission was to travel throughout the United States creating how-to videos that teach sustainable living tactics, which were then presented at schools and community forums, and on the website

Morgan is a conservationist and strives to reuse everything possible in order to decrease unnecessary waste that will pollute the environment. She has seen the importance of this practice worldwide, in travels through India, Nepal, Fiji, and Haiti, where waste clutters the streets and waterways, creating increasing health concerns. Morgan believes this to be a particularly important concept in Haiti, where the waste disposal system is lacking and water is unsafe for consumption.

While her treatment focus in Oregon has included orthopedic conditions and sports rehab, Morgan also enjoys working with pediatric and neurological cases abroad. Before becoming a PT, Morgan worked in a variety of settings (camps, clinics, therapeutic riding facilities) with diverse populations including children and adults with disabilities, varying neurological disorders, and children with systemic diseases, such as cancer and cystic fibrosis.

In this passion-fueled conversation we reflect on some deeper realizations that have struck us recently. A lot of our discussion generates a general yet powerful recommendation, to become very curious. Do so early, and often, and especially if you're going into a service industry. If you're curious, you'll be more likely to build awareness of the influences of business and how it can interact with our behaviors and lives.

Some very wise words are shared by Will in this episode in particular. If were going to passionately express our observation of a struggle we've gone through, we might as well deliver some action steps in case others find themselves also struggling. Will highlights 3 key business principles that, when mastered, can make any person more valuable to a business (in terms of employment-more hirable). The funny thing is, you don't even really have to master these functions, just be better than some others are and you can help them.

  • Generate new leads or potential customers
  • Convert leads or potential customers into customers 
  • Retain customers for repeated service

In this reflective episode, your grateful hosts Will and Nick sit down to discuss all the transformations that have occurred since the beginning of the podcast.

Together we have interviewed so many fabulous people and expanded our knowledge of so many topics. Its a shock to think that it's been two years since these episodes have been shared on iTunes, but the reward for sticking with the process this long is certainly proving to be invaluable. 

One of the greatest overarching themes we wanted to share with our listeners today is the action steps that have been shared with us over and over again. That starting something that will allow you to be creative or support your passion is a MUST - especially if it's not perfect at first. That common traits across great health care providers do exist, and what are they exactly? That learning never stops and the people you share that journey with are just as important as the destination.

For this episode your hosts Will and Nick decided to sit down and hash out some of the most transformative decisions they've made in their careers. This discussion doesn't have a whole lot of "new" theory behind it, but its a really cool opportunity to connect with others who feel like we do - curious. 

What's it like on the other side of the fence? What if I choose something totally against the grain? What if my backup career plan fails? How do I explain myself to people wondering what I'm doing with my career?

Naturally, our discussion is packed with analogies and butchered science references. We somehow manage to tie together Newton's laws of motion into our professional trajectory, as well as profess our love for the Institute of Clinical Excellence. But the take home message we really want to drive home is answering those questions above for ourselves. 

We want other health/medical professionals, students, or anyone just trying to make a difference in this world to chase down their curiosity. This is a short life for many of us, so use your most important commodity (time) to explore your passions. There is no right or wrong first action step, just that you TAKE action.

Dr Costas Karageorghis is a reader in sport psychology and Divisional Lead for Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences. From 2009-14, he served as Deputy Head (Research) of the former School of Sport and Education and led preparations for two REF2014 subject submissions (Sports-Related and Education). Costas has established an international reputation for his research into the psychological, psychophysiological and neurophysiological effects of music. He has captured 25 research grants during his academic career.

Marcelo Bigliassi is a PhD student at Brunel University London/United Kingdom. He has concluded a BSc and MSc in physical education at Londrina State University/Brazil, including an Erasmus period in Sports Science at Technical University of Lisbon/Portugal. He has been working with psychophysiology since 2009 by integrating physiological measures to understand psychological phenomena during conditions of exercise. He has published 19 peer-reviewed manuscripts in national and international journals, 32 abstracts and 1 book chapter. His research was acknowledged by magazines and newspapers around the world: Fitness Magazine® (US), Shape Magazine® (US), Galileu and many other Brazilian newspapers. In 2012, Marcelo developed a new application on Facebook for people to use music before, during and after different modes of exercise. The fBeat was developed in partnership with the international companies FILA® and W3Hauss®.

Costas’s music research has been featured in newspapers around the world; most recently in the TimesIndependentNew York TimesWall Street JournalWashington Post and Sydney Morning Herald. In both 2011 and 2016 he was the recipient of the Sportesse Award for Sport and Exercise Sciences at the annual conference of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). The awards were for new theoretical and mechanistic work in the area of music and physical activity. He is currently working on multi-modal stimulation during physical activity that entails the use of music, video images, virtual reality and visual primes. Such work is oriented towards enhancing people's sensory experiences during physical activity, with a view to increasing exercise adherence and promoting public health.
